From scratch: my new dress (with tutorial)

As promised, here is the tutorial on my new dress! I took this pretty knit fabric I bought from Fashion Fabric Club’s discounted fabric.

I sewed it into a giant tube, right sides facing. I decided that I would prefer one back seam instead of two side seams.

I folded down the very top of the dress to create a casing to insert elastic for the neckline.

Inserting elastic using a safety pin.

Once I pulled the elastic all the way through, I sewed it in place on each side.

I put the dress on my dress form to pin and create a waistline.

I decided to keep the back of the dress open.

I used elastic thread in my bobbin to create gathering in the waistline.

Next, I cut armholes.

I cut two fabric strips to create a tie on the back neckline. I sewed these on at the end of the elastic.

Lastly, I laid my new dress down and cut a curved hemline, creating a shorter hem in front with a longer backside. I did not hem because it is knit material and I prefer raw edges.

I added a belt to it and modeled away as my sons took pictures for me🙂

And I wore it on 4th of July!
